Raising backyard chickens and urban livestock is one of the hot trends in the Pacific Northwest. At ARAN Farms, current and would-be urban farmers can find a selection of unique breeds of poultry and livestock that are also sustainably raised.
Located near Seattle, ARAN Farms offers a variety of heritage breeds of poultry, goats and sheep for sale. Their chickens primarily are Swedish Flower Hens, a rare breed from Sweden, but also include Orpingtons and Americans, which produce blue eggs, Birchen Marans which lay cocoa colored eggs and Brown Sexlink, which produce brown eggs. Livestock include South African Boer Goats, a russet-colored medium sized breed developed in the early 1900s, and Gotland Sheep, an old European breed that the Vikings took on their ships to provide meat, milk and wool during their travels.
All livestock and poultry are fed with organic and non-GMO feed and seed. Chickens are free range, foraging on nearly five acres and enjoy roosting in the trees (even in rain and snow).
If you’re not in the market for chickens or livestock, Aran Farms also sells sustainably-raised eggs nearly year round. Eggs come in an assortment of colors from Aran Farms’ heritage chickens.
