A Different Kind of Switch: The Art of Alisha Merrick, Beyond the Switch Plate

For most people, a light switch plate is simply a functional necessity in the home. For San Juan Island artist Alisha Merrick, however, it is more than that—it is a work of art.

Merrick takes ordinary light switch covers and transforms them into small, colorful ceramic canvases for the home. Drawing inspiration from nature, each enameled cover features floral patterns and organic shapes in a range of colors, from botanical greens to earthy oranges and blues ranging from soft shades to vivid aquamarine.

Trained at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where she earned a BFA with a concentration in enameling, Merrick creates handcrafted light switch covers and other functional works of art, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of her island home. Colorful housewares, including fern-patterned bowls, and art jewelry showcase her bold designs and distinctive use of color.

Her work extends beyond functional art. Merrick is also a painter, drawing on nature, beauty, and tranquility for inspiration. She recently was featured on the San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour.

You can see Merrick’s work at local art shows and festivals, including the Anacortes Arts Festival, and on her website at www.alishamerrickart.com.

From the light switch to the painted canvas, Merrick finds ways to bring the natural world into everyday life. Her work is a reminder that even the smallest details of a home can be works of art.
